Racing in the Jublilee Regatta begins Sunday, August 19, in the Solent. Currents in the Solent during the week will exceed 2 knots and vary significantly over short distances. Currents around Cowes will exceed 3 knots on August 21, for the 'Race Around the Island.' "Local Knowledge" has constructed a detailed current model for the Solent and English Channel, implemented via software for the PC. Our programs integrate the current predictions with a broad range of navigational and tactical functions, as illustrated by the examples below.
Solent Currents 1 hr before low water at Portsmouth (red = flood)

Solent Currents at time of Portsmouth low water (red = flood)
wpe24.gif (72739 bytes)

Solent Currents one hour before high water at Portsmouth
wpe25.gif (65390 bytes)

"Best tack" solution to mark (wind 10 knots at 300 deg T), 3.5 hrs after Portsmouth low water (ILC 46 polars). The red line shows the intercept of a port tack to the current-corrected layline (magenta dots). If the boat then tacks for the mark, total time is 26:26, almost 4.5 min faster than via a tack to the starboard layline (green line). Solid blue lines are zero-current laylines. In the absence of a differential current, the two solutions would be identical.

Same situation as above. Routing solution returns "red" route as fastest to mark and several alternative routes for comparison (note times in box are color-coded to corresponding route). The red route is more than 6 minutes faster than the yellow (alternative courses here are restricted to different sectors relative to the rhumbline; there are several options for the user).

Same situation as above. This alternative display analyzes the course in terms of best "VMG" (here best VMG upwind), based on wind, current and boat performance parameters (polars). The larger the circle, the faster the VMG (size is not proportional to VMG). The medium-large circles north of the boat and approaching the upper layline suggest the best route at a glance, in agreement with the quantitative "best tack" and "best route" computations. Lines emanating from boat show its path on either tack, with current.

Routing solution for first part of "Around the Island" race, assuming wind of 10 knots from 300 degT, and a start 1 hr before Portsmouth high water. The race starts in early ebb in the Solent, with increasing ebb by the time the boat turns the corner south of Cowes (see below).

Same situation and solution as above. The time is now two hours later (1 hr after high water), at which point the boat has reached the location of the magenta dot and ebb has increased significantly.

If you will be sailing in the Jubilee (or anywhere in the Solent or English Channel), our LK current modules and programs can greatly assist your tactical planning. We have programs at different levels, and can also provide current modules and interpretive software (a "DLL") to augment third-party tactical programs.
