Differences in how Local Knowledge does Routing ...

Other programs use a method called "isochrones" for routing computations, first constructing lines that show where the boat could be if sailed effectively for a given time period, and then using these "isochrones" to compute the optimal route (shown as the red line in the example below). This method does not provide quantitative information about alternative routes, which you are left to infer from the isochrone pattern. This is a tough task even for an expert.

Local Knowledge "LK" uses a unique method, dividing the intervening region into a fine grid of points and computing the exact time it takes to complete the course by every possible route. Unlike other programs, LK does not use averages for wind or current values,  computing each at the precise time the "boat" reaches the intermediate point. LK finds both an optimal route (the red line in the example below) and up to 5 comparison routes (other colors). The time for each route (in hh:mm) is shown in the "Best Course Comparisons" box, color-coded to route.

You can step along the comparison solutions to see the predicted "boat" position at any intermediate time. In the example below the black dots show position at time 1903 hrs on 6/15/02 (second day of the Bermuda  Race). The right-hand column in the box shows distance to the destination from the black dot (in nm). The displays automatically recomputes and displays wind and current at that time (this example shows wind vectors).

** Other programs don't route well along shorelines and around obstacles
- but
Local Knowledge has a unique router which can do this with ease ..

In the example below the router avoids the Long Island shoreline and finds its way through Plum Gut to the destination mark. Shoreline definitions are built into the tidal-current model and are used regardless of the chart displayed. Other programs either route right through the land (like MaxSea) or attempt to use chart colors to distinguish land from water (Deckman).
